Gallant was the first book by V. E. Schwab that I read and I know, I know, I’m late to the train.
But hear me out: Gallant is the perfect ghost story. It’s got everything you’d ask for: mysterious family, grand empty houses, dying gardens, ghouls…
It’s a properly spooky story but the most stand-out part for me was the heart. The main character is simply fantastic. She’s powerful, confident, tenacious, stubborn, clever. This book has a relatively small cast, but goodness they’re all essential to the plot.
A warning: I did cry!
Gallant is a simple, clever, gothic story and it’s quite unlike my usual reading so I am super pleased that I enjoyed it. It kept my attention more than most books and it made me want to believe that doors can hold impossible secrets.
